Short Documentary on Japan’s No. 1 Food Fighter

The Tsunami!

Takeru Kobayashi (‘The Tsunami’) weighs in at 87 kg. At first glance, no one would expect this young Japanese to be a ‘competitive eater’, otherwise known as ‘Food Fighters’ by the fans of the sport.

There’s a short documentary of The Tsunami’s daily routine and training in preparation for eating competitions on YouTube which can be viewed here.

If you’re still bored, you can watch Takeru, the former world record holder for hot dog eating for six years eat a hot dog in slow motion.

Here it is:

Weight Loss Sunglasses

Weight loss sunglasses!

These Japanese-made weight loss sunglasses is said to help tame your appetite and weight!

So how does it work? As you can see from the picture above, the sunglasses are tinted blue, thus making everything you see blue, including your food! And as research has shown that blue is the least appetising colour of the rainbow, it will make you’re food look dull and boring so that you are less inclined to eat it. Plus, these glasses look pretty stylish too.

For about 1,890 Japanese Yen (around 20 USD), you can test out these glasses for yourself at Yumetai.

Just be careful, I’m not sure about you guys, but if I start seeing everything tinted in blue I’ll probably suffer from some sort of depression pretty soon…

Kimchi Going to Space

Space Kimchi!

Not letting Japan outdo them with their paper planes or boomarangs, the Koreans are making space history too! And what better way to do it then with some Kimchi, their beloved national dish!

Where Koreans go, Kimchi goes too and space is no different!

So why make a big fuss over bringing some food into space? Well, it’s the first fermented vegetable dish to experience zero gravity! Apart from that, it’s because Kimchi is required to be fermented that it has been causing problems for Korean scientist and chefs alike. This is because fermentation creates bacteria and microbes that scientist fear will become harmful in space after mutating due to cosmis rays! Scientist solved the problem through special packages and some radiation.

Now who will get to sink their teeth into these primo space kimchi? Now, those honour falls on Ko San, a computer science engineer who is also South Korea’s first space traveler on Aprial 8 this year. He will be staying at the Internation Space Station doing research and sharing his kimchi with fellow astronauts.

Not only is Kimchi going to space, but thanks to the hardwork and research by Korea Food Research Institute, Kimchis can now have longer shelflife which was always a problem for Kimchi being exported - Kimchi is taking over the world!

FF figurines comes with FF Potion

Final Fantasy Potion!

It wasn’t a while ago when Square Enix and Suntory teamed up to produce Final Fantasy Potions to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII. The can design looks very sleek and stylish, but from what i’ve read, the drink have a medicinal taste to it - thus the name, ‘potion’? That’s not very appealing…

It was some sort of promotional campaign they came up with for the FF franchise, but i guess it wasn’t very popular among the fans since their adding another incentive for you to buy the drink - Final Fantasy Figurines! You’ll have a chance to collect:
Cloud, Advent Children Cloud, tifa. Vincent, Zack, Crisis Core Aerith and One Winged Angel Sephiroth.

Final Fantasy Figurines!

The figurines look greats for something that comes with a drink and it probably cost more than the drink itself. I’ll be buying a FF potion, but it won’t be because i need HP.

Here’s the Japanese commercial for FF potion:

Octopus With Nine Tentacles

Nine tentacled octopus!

Octo means eight, thus Octopus has eight tentacles. Well, until this fella came along, this special octopus has nine tentacles! To give you some perspective on how amazing and rare this is, Masa Koita, the 60-year-old shop manager who noticed this nine tentacled sea creature said “In 40 years of handling seafood, I’ve never seen an octopus like this.” The octopus was sighted in the Marusan Seafood Shop in Marugame, Japan - Sadly, after it was already boiled, guess we won’t be able to see what the Octopus does with it’s extra tentacles.

A spokesperson for the Akashi Seafood Council in nearby Hyogo prefecture confirmed the unusual nature of the extra-tentacled creature: “In Akashi, we might see one every 20 years or so. They are extremely rare.” - Pink Tentacle
