One Piece, Chapter 576: The Great Pirate, Edward Newgate

Summary:
Cover page – just another unspectacular filler cover, let’s just get into the chapter.


The marines are shaking in fear at the sight of the Blackbeard pirates and their newfound comrades from Impel Down’s level 6 prison.


Blackbeard then proceeded to explain the reason that he needed the Shichibukai title was to get into Impel Down for this very purpose. But before he could finish vexing Sengoku, Whitebeard releases a quake in Blackbeard’s direction, annihilating the fortress they stood on.


The bitter fight between Whitebeard and Blackbeard commences! Blackbeard neutralised Whitebeard’s devil fruit ability before he could use it again, but Whitebeard instead uses his bisento to slash him.


Whitebeard then used his quake ability to choke Blackbeard, which leads Blackbeard to get his crew to help him.


After unloading all their bullets into his body, Whitebeard staggers and reminisce over a time when he drank sake with Gol D. Rogers under cherry blossoms to which he expressed his disinterest towards One Piece and learnt the meaning behind the ‘Will of D.”.


The great pirate then tells Blackbeard that he is not one of the men that Rogers wait for to which Blackbeard is surprised that he’s still alive. Whitebeard continues, saying that a grand battle is to come.


With his last breath, he roars: “One Piece, it exists!”


In another flashback, it is made known that Whitebeard was interested in ‘family’. He died standing, after receiving hundred of wounds from swords, bullets and cannonball. But not a single wound existed on his back. He has never retreated in his life.


A great star falls, an era has ended…




Even in death, he finds a way to piss off the marines!

With a chapter title like that, you can only expect the worst and prepare your heart and mind for what is to come.


Yes, we knew it was inevitable, but it is just as emotional and raw when it finally happened – Whitebeard dying, and with him, an era concludes, making room for a new age.


As much as I want to spend the whole of this week’s review talking about how awesome Whitebeard is, I wouldn’t know how to describe it and it’ll be too long anyway. Just let it be known, that he would have surely made it up high in TBA’s list of Top 10 Coolest Men of Anime.


As for the other developments in the arc, this chapter answered a lot of questions: we finally meet the wicked pirates that Ivankov talked about, and learn how the gates of justice opened for Luffy and co.


More light has also been shed on the mystery behind the ‘Will of D.’ although not much more has been learnt about it.


This chapter also sets the scene for the future of OP, we can roughly guess who’s going to be the straw hat crews’ new opponents now, and also we can predict that they will also play a big part in the grand battle that will engulf the world that Whitebeard mentions.


To take a stab at predicting it, I’ll say it will take place on Raftel island or the entrance to it based on how Whitebeard described the repercussions of finding One Piece.


This has been one of the most painful OP chapters to reread to write up a review.

All this tears and sorrow throughout this few chapters; its so heart wrenching to even read on.


Being misunderstood, called a failure of his era, holding the expectations of the world strongest man even in his age, betrayed by his sons, and yet all he ever wanted was a family.


The death of Whitebeard truly matches the style of the man himself.


I am sure Blackbeard has a plan of escaping Marineford. I mean come on; this guy had been planning even before he joined Whitebeard crews. He is a true opportunist.


I bet he promised the level 6 prisoners a shot to take down Whitebeard to convince them joining his crew. Oh and Crocodile will be so disappointed.


Oda once again let us have a little taste of the Will of D and what to come in the future.


On the side note, more and more Strawhat pirates had met each other. It won’t be long before they are reunited.


Will we see another Mera Mera No Mi and Gura Gura No MI users in the future?


R.I.P Whitebeard and Ace.



He stands tall, never faltering, not even in the face of unimaginable peril, not even in death! Whitebeard!
