Court Rules To Protect Landscape That Inspired ‘Ponyo’

The Hiroshima District Court has ruled against a government landfill and elevated bridge project construction project that was planned for Tomonoura in the Hiroshima prefecture of Japan.


The picturesque port town is the same town that inspired Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated film, Ponyo on the cliff. You can see the resemblance, can’t you?


The Presiding Judge, Akio Nose’s ruling was based on the fact that the port town was a national asset and that the projects would have seriously effected the scenery. The beauty of the area has captured people’s heart since long ago, with poems about Tomonoura’s scenery appearing on Japan’s oldest collection of poetry.


Hayao Miyazaki himself has also commented that “it was a good ruling”!


I, for one, am also happy with the ruling. I don’t know about you, but if I ever go to Japan one day, I’d like to be able to see the landscape that inspired Ponyo too.
