One Piece, Chapter 558: Brother

I never knew a beam of light can cause explosions.

Summary:
Cover page – The people of the island shows their gratitude to Brooke probably for rescuing the kidnapped girl. Now he’s writing a melody? Is anyone in a hurry to find their nakamas?


Luffy continues his conversation with Whitebeard and shares a vital piece of information regarding Ace’s execution being moved forward. The others are still shocked by his casual demeanour when facing a Yonkou.


Being the reckless person that he is, Luffy charges towards Ace, but he is faced with an attack by Kizaru. Ivankov saves Luffy from the attack, but he himself was forced to dodge an attack from Kuma which he reveals to be an old friend.


Meanwhile Luffy continues his rampage, Ace yells at Luffy for coming to save him which Luffy retorts with one of his corny but effective lines: “Because I’m your Brother!”


Moria’s zombies are put out of commission by Jimbei’s seawater attacks. Sengoku reveals the identity of Luffy’s father, but at this stage, no one is really surprised…


The chapter ends with a bang as Luffy uses Gear Third to defeat a giant!

It’s been awhile since we had a chapter without any surprises. Really, the only event in this chapter that was mildly unexpected was Ivankov’s relationship with Kuma.


The question is how far back does their friendship run? Does it extend back to before he became a Pacifista?


As a “Luffy-beating-up-marines” chapter, there was plenty of action, but nothing remarkable.


I did notice a resemblance between this arc and the Enies Lobby arc, though. Apart from pirates attacking a marine base, Ace’s speech is very similar to Robin’s, and so is Luffy’s reply.


So, like Robin, Ace is going to be rescued!


I have to agree with Soulboy, we already know Luffy has grown stronger since the Alabasta arc, if Oda’s intention for Hina’s appearance was to show Luffy’s development.


What exactly is Sengoku’s ‘preparation” will be pivotal in shaping the next few chapters. A buster call is unlikely, but it’s not out of the question. The other Pacifistas joining in as reinforcement is also a possible alternative.


It’s going to be interesting to see how Luffy fight next chapter when he reverts to his chibi-form, will Luffy be releasing any Haki in this arc?

The fact that Iva claimed to know Kuma may lead to him being a Revolutionary and a double agent as well.


That’s why he was once known as Kuma ‘The Tyrant’. And sending the Strawhat crew away during Sabaody Archipelago may be Dragon’s orders. The loyalty to the World Government may just as well be an act.


Hina’s appearing out of nowhere just felt like a waste of a precious page to me.


With the Gear Third activated, it is going to be soon before Ace is rescued. Not to mention with Marco being Luffy’s bodyguard as well.


But there is still 3 Admiral in his way. An addition of Inazuma and Jose into the battle might spice things up. Or maybe Buggy will face Kizaru due to the influence of his new found crew.


At any rate, what happened to Crocodile?



Luffy’s arm reminds me of Popeye’s…
