Les Gouttes De Dieu, Wine And Manga

I never thought I’ll see the day when Mangas become frontpage news on my local newspaper for all the right reasons.


To show the uninformed that mangas aren’t all about skimpy-clothed high school girls (And thank God it isn’t!), today’s front page story was about how the international wine industry, especially France and Australia’s has benefited from the manga, Kami no Shizuku (The Drop’s of God).


The story of the manga revolves around the son of a famous wine critic who has just passed away. The son, Kanzaki Shizuku, must now find 13 wines that his father has described in his will.


It’s a much welcomed change from the usual negative and controversial publicity that this specific area of Japanese culture has received on the world stage. Such as the recent manga based on Hitler’s manifesto, Mein Kampf.


The article talked about the increase in sales of specific brands of wine shiraz after it’s mentioned in Kami no Shizuku which may not turn this GFC around but at least it has put smiles on winemakers around the world.


Not surprising though, none of the wine makers expected free publicity from such a source. In fact, most of them never even heard of mangas before!


Australia’s The Laughing Magpie was the focus of this article when its sales jumped after appearing on the latest chapter of the manga.
