Japan To Have Power Station In Space

Japan is known for making science fiction into science non-fiction. And it appears they’ll be doing it again…


Almost like an idea out of a sci-fi, Japan has planned to develop a solar power station in space. This is no joke. It’s totally serious. To prove their seriousness, the Japanese are preparing to invest USD21 Billion (2 trillion yen) for this out-of-the-world project. Considering Japan is a debt-ridden nation, this is a mighty commitment to a far-fetch idea.


But ideas always start somewhere, right? The brains behind this is no evil villian (I hope), but none other than Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and industrial design company IGI Corp. Don’t wet your pants just yet though; the deal is still being put together at the moment.


This power plant is expected to beam enough electricity from space to power 294,000 homes. The power station itself will be equipped with four square kilometers of solar panels that will generate 1 gigawatt of electricity.


Considering this whole thing works, and Japan doesn’t decide to use it to bring about world domination, it’ll be a tremendous leap towards green energy which I certainly can see other countries following suit.


We’ll find out soon enough, the power station is expected to be completed in just four-year’s time.
