World Highest Cricket Match On Mt. Everest

Did I say ‘on’ Mt. Everest? I meant on the base of Mt. Everest. Still, it is no mere feat playing cricket at 5,165 metres (17,000 feet) above sea level! Playing cricket in such harsh conditions has been described by one of the players as like ‘having a plastic bag over your head’!


The two British team that ventured to Everest was named after the New Zealander Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay who was the first to reach the world’s highest peak. The main goal of the Twenty20 cricket match at Gorakshep in Nepal was to raise more than $520,000 for charity and to set a record for the world’s highest official cricket match.


Oddly enough, the expedition did not have any professional athletes and consisted of only lawyers, medics and the official cricket referees that had been training for months to prepare for the oxygen-lacking atmosphere at that height.


The match was won by Team Hillary with a score of 5 for 152, with Team Tenzing getting 116 with all out.
