Japanese Man Recognised As Double A-Bomb Victim

You have to be pretty down on your luck when you miss your bus to work or spill coffee all over your soon-to-be-due project. But there exist a truly unfortunate man in Japan that surpasses all these misfortunes!


A ‘bad day’ or even ‘bad days’ wouldn’t begin to describe the horrifying and painful ordeal that Tsutomu Yamaguchi experienced between August 6 to 9 of 1945. We may all think surviving an atomic bomb attack is extremely lucky, which is true, especially when the chance of surviving was 1 in 260,000 for the attack on Hiroshima, Japan! But, Tsutomu Yamaguchi survived two atomic bomb attacks!


What a story to tell your grand children eh?


How this remarkable series of events happened is as follows:

Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on a business trip on Aug. 6, 1945, when a U.S. B-29 dropped an atomic bomb on the city. He suffered serious burns to his upper body and spent the night in the city. He then returned to his hometown of Nagasaki just in time for the second attack, city officials said.


“As far as we know, he is the first one to be officially recognized as a survivor of atomic bombings in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” Nagasaki city official Toshiro Miyamoto said. “It’s such an unfortunate case, but it is possible that there are more people like him.” - Daily Yomiuri

I guess, it really depends on how you look at it. You can either see him as being very unfortunate or very lucky. As an optimist, I’d like to think that the second a-bomb cured the radiation sickness that Tsutomu Yamaguchi got from the first a-bomb attack. Oh, and if you didn’t know, the picture shows the ‘atomic bomb dome’ (Genbaku Dome), the only building that sort of survived the Hiroshima attack.
