Advance Wars: Days of Ruin preview

With the release date (1/25/08) of the newest installment in Advance Wars series — Advance Wars: Days of Ruin drawing closer, I thought it would be nice to prepare everyone for the game itself with a little preview. Afterall, everyone knows that Days of Ruin will be different to its predecessors in terms of everything.

For those that owned a Gameboy Advance will undoubtedly have played or heard your GBA buddies ramble on about the greatness of the Advance Wars series. Those that are new to the title, Advance Wars is a turned-based strategy game that, depending on the player, might be very addictive. The combination of its game-play and graphics gave a “light-hearted” motif targeted towards children. But it did more than that and now have a legion of young and old followers!



However, all that has changed, with new characters (none from the previous games), new units and most astounding is the new storyline (totally unrelated to the previous games), Days of Ruin is bound to keep old followers on the edge of their seats and draw in new fans. The storyline goes like this:

Almost 90% of mankind has been killed off following a devastating meteor strike which has destroyed much of civilization and caused a massive dust cloud to blot out the sun. Scattered survivors pick through the wreckage, and the remnants of several military superpowers patrol the ravaged landscape, some factions protecting the innocent while the others prey upon them. - GWN

Everything about Dawn of Ruin had taken a more ‘mature’ stance, maybe to give old veterans a change or to accomodate their maturing fans. We won’t know if the change if for the better until the game itself comes out, but many reviews have shed a positive light on it so it will most probably do the series proud!
