TBA Most Wanted Wii Games

TBA’s Most Wanted Wii Games!

With 14 million units predicted to be sold by March 2008, the Wii is no doubt on track to becoming the most popular home consoles in the history of gaming. And it’s easy to see why… the combination of a revolutionary motion-sensitive controller, a slick design and an affordable price tag almost guaranteed the success of the product since its launch. Furthermore, the Wii has rid itself of the problem that plagued its predecessor; the GameCube which lacked a good selection of games. The Wii has been blessed with a good selection of games — that is already available on the system – and many upcoming games from third party developers.

This is a list of Top 10 Wii Games that the editors of To Be Asian think that everyone must get in this holiday season. This list will not be mentioning launch games, because;

1) It’s just unfair, you’ll always remember your first time, and

2) Do you know of one Wii owner that doesn’t have these games already…? Exactly! Point proven.

Without further ado, here are the 10 games that no Asian can afford to miss:

Number 10
Guitar Hero 3

Guitar Hero II!
Summary
Guitar Hero, is a video game published by RedOctane and is based around using a guitar-shaped controller to simulate the playing of rock music.

Why should you want it?
DDR on your fingertips, tell me one Asian that can resist? Also, you can attach the Wii remote to your guitar, and make that guitar into a rumbling, accelerometer capable beast.

Why this spot on the Top 10 List?
We found the whole ‘transformer’ with the Wii remote and the guitar kind of exciting… but, the fact that the Wii version doesn’t come with the ability to download content right out of the box did put us off. It received this place because well, it is still Guitar Hero!

Number 9
Battalion Wars 2

Battalion Wars II!
Summary
A military action strategy game that doesn’t follow the traditions of the genre it is in. Instead, users are provided with a unique style of graphics and character design, fun shooter controls, and a good amount of humour.

Why should you want it?
Online multiplayer feature is now available in this sequel. You can now ‘pawn’ your friend or some guy from half-way around the world. And that’s not all… this sequel also give you the ability to control several new sea-faring units such as Battleship, Frigate, Submarine, Dreadnought and Transport. Need I say more?

Why this spot on the Top 10 List?
The game still lacked the split screen multiplayer mode that was not available in the first game. This inadequacy of the first game has moved on to ‘plague’ this sequel.

Number 8
The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night

The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night!
Summary
The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night is a single player video game in the Spyro the Dragon series.

Why should you want it?
This is the 7th console game of the series. Any game that lasted this long has to be ofsome good… and indeed it is. You are playing as a cute purple dragon, beating bad guys, and that’s about it.

Now boys, you might be thinking that this game is made for children and women… and you might be right. But any game that has a dragon that beat villains titled ‘Dark Master’ is worthy of me playing it.

Why this spot on the Top 10 List?
If this game didn’t have an Ass-whopping dragon in it, it wouldn’t even be on the list. But since it does, that’s why it is here.

Cooking Mama: Cook Off

Cooking Mama: Cook Off!
Summary
A sequel to the DS game of the same name. Essentially, it is a video game based around performing kitchen activities. Get ready to Mash! Slice! Stir! Shake! Roll!

Why should you want it?
If you loved the game on the DS, you are going to love this even more. Come on! The Wii remote was practically made for this game. For those that never played this series before, never fear!! You will love this game, it is fast-paced, hilarious, and fun, and coupled with the almost non-existent learning curve, this is a game made for people of all ages. Never before can you pretend the Wii remote is a frying pan or a rolling pin.
And to all the guys reading: buying this for your girlfriends = brownie points.

Why this spot on the Top 10 List?
The game lack a story, it is basically a round the sofa game, and does get old if you play it solo. In other words, this game requires a small crowd to reach its full potential.

Number 6
Mario Strikers Charged

Mario Striker Charged!
Summary
A soccer video game comprising of ‘some’ of your favourite Nintendo characters.

Why should you want it?
It’s Mario playing soccer, in a game where the rules promote rough tackles, unleashing of spikey shells… and goals often come more than one at the time. Plus the online multiplayer feature is to die for; not only can you challenge your friends and meet new rivals through the wonders of the internet, you can also climb online ladders by competing in ranked matches. This game is truly the ‘Soccer World Cup’ of gaming.

Why this spot on the Top 10 List?
We felt that the number of available team captains to choose from were a little limited. But beside that, it is in the Number 6 position only because the games in front of it were that much better.

Number 5
Fire emblem: Radiant dawn

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn!
Summary
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is a tactical role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo that is the tenth for the Fire Emblem series.

Why should you want it?
This is one game with attitude. It is by no means easy. It is a challenging tactical role-playing game, which by itself is saying a lot. The opinion about this game is very widespread; some reviewers gave it 5 out of 10 for being ‘staggeringly difficult’ while others gave it 9.5 out of 10 for the same reason.
It will definitely keep you entertained for a fair amount of time, and the cel-shaded animation and graphic is quite good, although not that much different from its GameCube predecessor. The story is quite good as expected from a game that was compared to the likes of Final Fantasy.

Why this spot on the Top 10 List?
Asians love RPGs, so there had to be a decent RPG style game in the Top 5. However, it must be noted that the Top 4 games are in a whole different league. Only perfect games exist from this point onward. Be warned!

Number 4
MarioKart Wii

MarioKart Wii!
Summary
No summary needed. Everyone should know this series, if they don’t then they haven’t truly lived.

Why should you want it?
You can attach the Wii wheel to your Wii remote so that you can drive your Kart like you would a real car… online play with up to 12 players… new items and weapons… new characters… custom karts… need I say more?

Why this spot on the Top 10 List?
No real reason except for personal preference. The top 4 games of this list are so good that it really just comes down to your own personal preference.

When and ehhh…price?
March 2008, Price TBA.

Number 3
No More Heroes

No More Heroes!
Summary
With game play similar to those of the Grand Theft Auto series, this game revolves around our main character, Travis Touchdown, a stereotypical otaku who lives in poverty in the fictional town of Santa Destroy, California. After winning a Beam Katana in an internet auction he becomes a hitman and kills another hitman, Helter Skelter, which earns him rank 11 by the UAA, the governing body of assassins. For the rest of the game the player lives Travis’s life, earning money and climbing the ranks of the UAA.

Why should you want it?
If you don’t want it after reading the summary, then there must be something wrong with you. But it’s my job to convince you… so here we go. The game allow you to swing to control the katana by swinging the Wii remote, additionally you get to perform finishing strikes and other cool moves. So basically you get the best of Red Steel and Metal Gear Solid. Also the game don’t follow a strict storyline, so you are free to go about the game as you wish… it’s almost like a RPG combined with a FPS that have gone on steroids.

Why this spot on the Top 10 List?
I bet you guys must have thought that I was mad when you saw this unknown game placed ahead of Mario Kart. But after reading the summary and the reasons I put forward about… still any doubts left in your head? An otaku that became an assassin = winning combination.

When and ehhh…price?
February 2008, Price TBA.

Number 2
Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy!
Summary
This is the next game in the Super Mario series. Following in the footsteps of Super Mario 64 and a little less in the footsteps of Super Mario Sunshine.

Why should you want it?
Mario is out saving the princess by collecting stars, and when each ‘castle’ or should I say ‘planets’ are hundreds and sometime thousands of light years apart, you know you have a promising game at hand. Also, this time around, it’s just Mario, and the Wii Remote chucking out brilliant moves and attacks. The water gun that has made its Game Cube predecessor a laughing stock is nowhere in sight.

There is also a multiplayer co-operation option where one play gets to control Mario and a star pointer while the other controls another point on-screen to gather Star Bits to shoot at enemies.

Also, the game has a very interesting mechanics when coming to gravity. Each planet has its own different gravitational pull which in turn will affect Mario’s ability to do certain moves and jump certain heights.

And if the above are not enough, there are 121 stars to collect in the game. Enough to keep you occupied for a whiiillllleee….

Why this spot on the Top 10 List?
It was a hard choice between Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Mario Galaxy for the top spot, but in the end it was Smash Brothers for reasons that will be explained.

Number 1
Super Smash Brothers Brawl

Super Smash Brothers Brawl!
Summary
Super Smash Brothers Brawl is an upcoming and highly anticipated crossover fighting game where characters from all over the Nintendo Universe are pitted against one another in various kinds of combat matches.

Following the style of its predecessors, the game uses a battle system different from that of typical fighting games. Choosing from a variety of characters, one to four players fight on various stages, trying to knock their opponents off the screen.

Why should you want it?
Online multiplayer features, so you now play against other people from all around the world. This has to be one of the most anticipated feature of any game in the history of video games… not kidding!

Snake of Metal Gear Solid and Sonic is in the game.

New items, new stages and level builder, so that you can build your own stage, and basically play this game forever.

Snake of Metal Gear Solid and Sonic is in the game.

Characters now have the ability to perform character-specific super attacks that can devastate all opponents on screen. How kick ass is that?

Snake of Metal Gear Solid and Sonic is in the game.

Customisable buttons configuration for each control method and player profile to save it into. For those who find the A and B buttons to be too far apart…

Oh, did I mention that Snake of Metal Gear Solid and Sonic is in the game along with a whole range of new characters.

Why this spot on the Top 10 List?
Super Smash Brothers beat Mario Galaxy for the top spot because of a couple of reasons:
- Smash Brothers is a game where people can actually choose who they want to play as, unlike Mario Galaxy where you have to play as Mario. So this game would appeal to more people.
- Inclusion of 3rd party game characters was a big plus for me. Never before has such a big collection of game characters come together on one game.
- With the level builder, this game can basically be played forever… I don’t see why not? I am still playing Smash Brothers on the N64.

When and ehhh…price?
Early 2008, Price TBA.

And that’s TBA’s Most Wanted Wii Games for 2007!

Strikers isn’t in the 8th position, its in the 6th.

    Thanks for the correction :)

Sadly, this list also represents nearly all of the games worth owning or renting for the Wii for some time. Besides ports that don’t work quite right and quirky niche games, these standbys are the lump sum of the bright future Nintendo has for us for a while. Oh well, we’re all used to waiting for the next Zelda game.
