NBA goes to China

NBA is planning to begin an unprecedented expansion into the Chinese market! In a country with a population of 1.3 billion and which 300 million play basketball (the population of USA), it’s just too good of an opportunity for NBA.
“We believe the potential of a market with four times the population of the United States ultimately must be at least what the United States is,” said Adam Silver, the NBA’s deputy commissioner, who describes China’s growth potential as “exponential.” Thenewstribune.com
The prospects in China for NBA is huge, last year alone NBA earned $50 million in China. Although it’s nothing much compared to their total revenue of almost $4 billion, it is a start and there is much more things to be done by NBA China!
Of course, entering the world’s fastest growing economy will be no easy task, especially for NBA which has never undertook such an expansion. That is why, NBA has hired Timothy Chen, one of China’s best business executive to head NBA China.
As JapanTimes says:
The key may be the 16-team Chinese Basketball Association. Begun 12 years ago, it was the proving ground for the Houston Rockets’ Yao Ming and China’s newest NBA player, Yi Jianlian, the Milwaukee Bucks’ power forward.
